Cornell’s Extern Program

What are Cornell’s Extern Programs?

The Extern Program (for sophomores, juniors and seniors during January break) and FRESH (for first-year students during Springbreak) offer career-exploration opportunities for students.

Students spend one to two days shadowing the sponsor in the workplace, gaining hands-on exposure to a career field of interest. The visit could last even longer for a project, if the sponsor chooses this option. Students are responsible for their own transportation and accommodations, and no compensation is involved.

What activities are beneficial for students?

  • Talk with the student about your career field, your career path and decision-making, your organization, and your job responsibilities.
  • Have the student attend appointments and meetings with you, if feasible.
  • Set up a meeting with others in your organization (esp. varying levels and positions).
  • Arrange a tour, or assign a career-related project or task.

If your organization is highly confidential, or you travel extensively, but you still wish to help, consider offering to meet the student off-site (perhaps for lunch or breakfast), or to hold an in-person or phone informational interview. Even brief interaction with alumni can provide a wealth of information to a student weighing career and academic decisions.

How are students selected?

Students from all colleges are eligible, and sponsors can list requirements or preferences of college/major or interests based on your background, field, organization, or project. You specify your requirements and preferences and Cornell will match an extern with you. Our goal is to match as many students with appropriate externships as possible.

How do I sign up? What is the timeline?

  1. Complete the on-line Registration Form at or return the pdf form by mail or fax (607-255-3060) by September 25.
  2. You will receive notice in late November with the information on your selected student(s).
  3. The student(s) will contact you in early December to finalize date(s) and logistics.
