THE SPACE FORCE: From Rhetoric to Reality

Thursday June 25th, 7:30-9:30pm MST

Presenter:
Dr. Timiebi Aganaba-Jeanty, Assistant Professor, School of the Future of Innovation in Society with a courtesy appointment at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, Arizona State University

Join us for a thoughtful discussion with Dr. Timiebi Aganaba-Jeanty, spouse of esteemed Cornell Club of AZ member Jean-Moise Jeanty JGSM ‘18.

In June of 2018, the Trump administration directed the Department of Defense and Pentagon to begin the process necessary to establish a Space Force as the sixth branch of the Armed Forces, separate and equal to the other branches. Since then, the media and pundit mill has interpreted this call in a variety of ways. Finally, on December 20, 2019, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) established the Space Force with support from Congress.

What does this actually mean for the future of space endeavors in America and the world?
We will discuss the perceived threats that led to the establishment of the Space Force and describe its several component parts, introduce some of the debates about the legality of military uses of space, and challenge you to make up your own mind if peace, security, and development in space will be advanced through this new institution.

Cornell Multi-Club Mixer: Hosted by Cornell Club of DC

Sunday June 14th, Noon-1pm MST

Pour a glass of your favorite beverage and make new friends and connections with Cornellians from across the world. This online mixer will feature members of the Cornell Clubs of Arizona, Connecticut, DC, Florida, London, Pittsburgh, and Toronto. Roster subject to change. Share your favorite spots in Collegetown, reminisce on the festivities of Spring/Slope Day, and learn how Cornell has changed over the decades.

We will use Zoom video chat and split into small breakout rooms, so everyone has a chance to talk and share with a few people. Then we’ll rotate around, so you’ll have a chance to meet many Cornellians. The video chat will begin a few hours early, so come beforehand for technical assistance if needed.
